405 Final Reflection

December 7, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I am extremely pleased that I took this course.  It has enabled me to learn about a topic that I have held much interest in for quite some time now.  I thought the readings were extremely helpful in me gaining knowledge about our subject and what we would be working on in the future.  I hope to continue to further my knowledge in web design.  I intend to buy some books to read on some of the advancements that are taking place and to keep my knowledge sharp on the matter.  I am pleased with the work that I have done in this class and am confident that I have a strong base to further my production company’s web base. I will most definitely recommend this course for other students.  THANKS ALOT!!!

Sincerely,

Chad Fisher

Chapter 10-Design

December 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

A great conclusion to an effective book!  Heskett does an outstanding job in this chapter of explaining why design is so important to us.  He mentions, on page 133, that America, which constitutes approximately 3 percent of the earth’s population is using 25 percent of the world’s available resources.  Later in the chapter he explains that design is a product of, usually, independent, individualized creativity.  This illustrates how one designer (or person) can effectively change the entire course of human history based upon design.  This statement is extemely profound and accurate.   He maintains that design isn’t a simple act of activity, but rather an expression by societies of what’s important and how to sustain life.  Overall, I would give this book a 7 out of 10.  I was a little skeptical at first, but he has taken design and appropriated it in all walks/aspects of life.

Chapter 9-Design

For the first time in reading this book I can say that there were to largely interesting and intellectually stimulating chapters in a row.  For the majority of the book it seemed like Heskett got bogged down with technical jargon.  Or maybe it has just taken me this long to become accustomed to his terminology and writing style.  However, his writing seems much more concise in these later chapters than in previous readings.  His take on how McDonald’s cannot control every aspect of their franchise throughout every market around the globe, but use design as a tool to establish and maintain general standards was incredibly profound.  The paragraph above the aforementioned was also stimulating.  Heskett mentions that Mercedes Benz’ design is unified, but General Motors isn’t.  GM depends on constant differentiation with its products.  After reading this chapter I realized how important design is in terms of household tools and hygiene products.  Not every person in the world will need a fruit pealer, but almost everyone will be impressed with its efficient and effective design.  Which could cause consumers to buy based on economics, simplicity and design.

Chapter 8-Design

I found this chapter to be extremely interesting.  I had never really thought about the design and effectiveness of road signs.  And how they may, or may not, be universal throughout the world.  I’ve learned that design in terms of road signs is extremely important.  Their colors and design evoke a certain understanding in your brain, which has taken residence due to their design (height, width, colors used, and overall design).   This was an extremely well written piece which flowed magnificently.  I found particularly interesting Heskett’s conclusion in which he states, “Design, in this sense, is part of the problem.  It is a subsystem within wider economic and social systems and does not function independently of these contexts.”  Although it’s extremely important, design isn’t the main purpose designers make road signs a certain way.  They’re used across the world to indentify different systems.

Final Project: Progress

November 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I have made great progress with my final project. I went to the new Mansfield Senior High School last Tuesday and took photos of the school. I took photos of the outside of the building. However, the weather didn’t cooperate. It was very dreary/overcast and then began to rain. I got some good test shots and found some good spots to take pictures. So it wasn’t a total washout. I want to go back and take pictures of the outside of the school when it’s sunny. This will help evoke the feeling I’m attempting to evoke. I don’t want the school to look bedraggled due to weather. I want it to feel as though there’s a new beginning on the horizon. I will also take pictures of the men’s basketball team at home. However, they do not play at home until next weekend. So, I’ll be cutting it awfully close, but it’s necessary. I’ll also be listening to some more music of my friends. I had a track picked out, but want to listen to other tracks to be certain that’s what I want.

Initial branding: is contingent upon presentation and the logo being used.  The goal with branding is to make sure our logo is recognizeable even if people can’t read.  The logo should be indicative of the comapny and the feeling they want to evoke with their advertising campaign.

Road signs in different countries have common features in different companies. Examples include the size, color, font, and shape of the sign.  They’re relatively universal for the entire world.  This can be relatable to web design b/c it’s necessary to have a site that looks the same everywhere.
